CTE Preparation Program

Career and Technical Education for students in need of special services is available at both the
F. Donald Myers Education Center and the Southern Adirondack Education Center.

CTE Prep-Construction Trades
Students learn entry-level skills in masonry, electrical, plumbing, framing and basic home repair. Emphasis is on safety and measurement while using hand and power tools.

CTE Prep-Culinary Arts
Students learn cooking, baking and other culinary techniques in a hands-on, team oriented environment. In this program, special emphasis is placed on developing professionalism, decision-making, and communication skills.

CTE Prep-Manufacturing and Benchwork
Students learn to transform wood and metal into furniture, crafts and gifts. They will learn to read blueprints, measure accurately, safe use of power tools, fabrication, assembly, and finishing techniques. Students will set up and decorate the Gift Shop, manage money, sell merchandise, and interact with the public. Woodworkers need 6" or 8" leather work boots. Metalworkers need 8" steel-toed work boots. All students should wear denim pants, and long hair needs to be pulled back.

CTE Prep-METS (F. Donald Myers Education Center)
Multi-Exploratory Training Services (METS) students at the Myers Center learn self-management, interpersonal skills, decision-making, and teamwork through the METS program. METS classes have a technical orientation - they allow students between 15 to 17 years old the opportunity to experience and explore a variety of industries. Students rotate through modules that range in length and cover different career and technical areas including culinary arts, hospitality, automotive technology, and graphics.

CTE Prep-Pre-Occupations
Pre-Occupations is a half-day program for students with special needs who are at least 14 years old. Remedial English and math are taught through hands-on experiences and peer tutoring. Learning occurs in either small or large groups. Students also intern at local businesses with a job coach. Upon successful completion, students can move on to the Employment Preparation program.

CTE Prep-Employment Preparation
Employment Preparation is a half-day program for students with special needs who are at least 15 years old. It emphasizes social skills, problem solving and personal health and hygiene. Students participate in small groups to schedule and implement activities at the Myers Center, including deliveries, maintenance, and recycling. Students also visit CTE programs to determine which program they would like to attend the following year.
