School Safety Officer

1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field and three (3) years of criminal field investigation or inspection experience utilizing established standards with established community and law enforcement relationships; OR
2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college with an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field plus five (5) years of criminal field investigation or inspection experience utilizing established standards with established community and law enforcement relationships; OR
3. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and seven (7) years of criminal field investigation or inspection experience utilizing established standards with established community and law enforcement relationships; OR
4. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a),(b) and (c) above.

Special Requirement:  Must participate in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and Boys Town training within the first three (3) months following appointment to the position.

Working knowledge of the practices and procedures necessary to maintain order and ensure the safety and protection of individuals and security of buildings, grounds and equipment; Skilled in security and safety practices, enforcement of laws, threat assessment and emergency management response; Skilled in surveillance techniques, use of closed circuit video cameras, investigation, interviewing, proper search and seizure and evidence collection; Working knowledge of safety precautions necessary to eliminate or prevent fires, accidents and safety hazards; Highly trained and experienced in dealing effectively with students, staff and the public regarding security of school facilities and conduct on school premises; particularly dealing with highly volatile, emotionally and/or mentally disturbed persons; Good knowledge of current drugs, alcohol and weapons prevalent within our served constituencies; Working knowledge of diversity awareness, cultural differences, mediation techniques, conflict resolution, restraint and self-defense techniques; Highly skilled in effective communication; understanding and carry out oral and written directions; preparing clear and concise reports; Extensive experience in dealing with adolescent individuals; Ability to remain calm in stressful situations; Ability to exercise sound judgment in carrying out duties; Training in physical fitness and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
