Congratulations to Students Who Competed in Regional SkillsUSA Competition
Friday, March 20, 2015
Nearly 140 Career and Technical Education students from the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES participated in the regional SkillsUSA competition that was held on March 18 at Schenectady County Community College and Stratton Air National Guard Base.
The students, who are from 30 different school districts located in the five-county region that WSWHE BOCES serves, are enrolled in one of 28 different career-based areas offered through its Career and Technical Education program.
The competition pitted the top winners from local competitions from nine career and technical education programs in northeastern New York from Hudson to Mineville. There were a total of 41 competitions: nine focused on work readiness/leadership skills and 32 were career-specific competitions that measured a student’s hands-on skill in their chosen field of study. Competitions ranged from auto vehicle maintenance, commercial baking and related technical math to photography early childhood education, welding and extemporaneous speaking. Students are given an assignment that must be completed within a set time frame and are judged by business and industry leaders.
Students prepare for the competition for months, often staying after school to be coached by their teachers. The competition is on par with an athletic match up, allowing the best of the students to move onto the state competition in Syracuse on April 23 and the national competition in Louisville, Ky., from June 22 to 26.
SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization, is devoted to rewarding students for excellence, for involving industry in directly evaluating student performance and in keeping career training relevant to employers’ needs.
Congratulations to all the CTE students from the F. Donald Myers and Southern Adirondack Education Centers who participated in the regional competition. Below are the individual awards received from each center.
