FFA Students Will Head to National Convention in the Fall
Wednesday, May 20, 2015
Congratulations to Career and Technical Education students in the Environmental Conservation/Forestry program who competed at the New York State Future Farmers of America (FFA) convention at Morrisville State College from May 14 to 16 where more than 1,000 of the best high school students and future agricultural leaders converged.
Students competed in the Forestry Team Career Development Events where they demonstrated skills and competencies in a wide range of forestry topics from understanding the impact of the forest environment and the forest industry to the American economy.
The team from the F. Donald Myers Education Center in Saratoga Springs placed first overall, and the team from the Southern Adirondack Education Center (SAEC) in Hudson Falls placed second. Both centers had eight students place within the top 10 individual scores in the competition, with a student from SAEC placing first overall. The team from Myers will represent New York State at the national convention in Louisville, Ky. this fall.
Riley Bryant, one of the team members on the Myers team, said, "It really was a team effort. We each have our specialty." He thought that the secret to the team's success was all the preparation they did. "We did a lot of studying beforehand. We'd go out to the woodlands and then come in and study tool identification. I think it will be more intense at the national level because we'll be competing against students from other states."
