Community Service Project Provides Food to Homeless Youth Shelter
Monday, June 08, 2015
Margaret "Peggi" Hayner coordinated a food drive as a community service project to earn merit status in the Boys Town Management System. (See story on left about Merit Level.)
A Mechanicville High School senior, Peggi is in the Special Education program at the F. Donald Myers Education Center. She is also an officer in the Myers' Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Chapter. It was through SADD that she coordinated the food drive with students in the BOCES Educating Autistic and Related Disorders Students (BEARS) class and the Therapeutic Support Program.
Peggi said that they have held food drives in the past and she always enjoyed working with the BEARS students. So much so, she has decided that that is the direction she will head in the future. Her plan is to attend Hudson Valley Community College and then transfer to Maria College to earn a degree in occupational therapy and work with the autistic population.
To publicize the food drive, Peggy created posters and hung them all around the Myers Center campus. She worked with the BEARS class students on coordinating the food collection and delivered eight boxes of food to the Captain Homeless Youth Shelter.
Miriam Davis-Doern, Homeless Youth Liaison and Myers SADD Advisor explained that the Captain Homeless Youth Shelter has temporarily housed many Myers students who have found themselves without a safe place to sleep. "Our students wanted to show their gratitude for their service through this food drive," she said.
