Author JD Spero Spoke to Students about Writing
Thursday, October 29, 2015
Johanna Davies "JD" Spero, a local author who has written two books, talked about writing to students in Jolie O'Brien and Georgianna Bull's English Language Arts classes on Friday, October 23.
The students are part of the Special and Alternative Education program at the F. Donald Myers Education Center in Saratoga Springs.
The students haven’t read either of Mrs. Spero’s books, but after listening to her read from her second book “Forte,” students want to read it. Mrs. Spero offered to return to discuss it.
Commenting on Mrs. Spero’s visit, Mrs. Bull said, “It was amazing! You could have heard a pin drop for an hour. Mrs. Spero captured the attention of each and every student. I have been teaching writing at various levels for my entire teaching career and was happy for the opportunity to have read a book and been able to ask the author why she made those choices she used in her book. Writing isn't a mysterious process. Mrs. Spero explained how she edits her writing five or six times and works with four or five editors who make cuts and suggestions. She also shared where she finds her inspiration.
“I consider having a published author answer thoughtful questions asked by our students one of my favorite teaching moments."
In addition to “Forte,” Mrs. Spero has written “Catcher’s Keeper.” Click here for more information on the author.
