Final Day for Poinsettias and Wreath Sale from Horticulture Students
Wednesday, November 18, 2015
Poinsettias are now 50% off and selling for $3, while supplies last, at the Horticulture, Landscaping and Floral Design classroom and retail shop at the F. Donald Myers Education Center in Saratoga Springs. The shop is open to the public from noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The horticulture students have been growing poinsettias from cuttings beginning the second day of school. The plants are sold as part of the program’s school-based enterprise.
In addition to poinsettias, students are selling wreaths as part of a Future Farmers of America (FFA) Club fundraiser. Comprised of balsam and Fraser fir from River Bend Christmas Tree Farm in Lake Luzerne and Seagroatt-Riccardi floral wholesalers, the wreaths come in three different sizes. Wreath sizes and prices are: 16-inch wreath for $16; 20-inch wreath for $20, and a 30-inch wreath for $30. Custom orders upon request. In addition to creating the wreaths, students calculate expenses and profit from the wreath sales.
All items will be on sale until December 23 or until sold out, whichever comes first.
In this program, students gain experience in how to run a production greenhouse and a retail shop, along with general career and financial management skills. Students also run a retail flower shop and will provide flowers for weddings and events upon request.
