Move Over Hamilton
Tuesday, November 21, 2017
Exceptional Learners at the Southern Adirondack Education Center had an opportunity this month to experience Aaron Jafferis & Gihieh Lee’s Shakespeare: The Remix, one of Proctor’s To Go and theREP’s touring productions. It is the story of a hip teenage girl who finds herself in a verbal battle with the Bard himself while tackling some of the powerful women in Shakespeare’s lexicon. Students experienced excerpts from Hamlet, Macbeth, Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The piece highlighted the power of language found in Shakespeare’s works and compares it with that of early hip-hop and slam poetry.
ELA Instructor Georgiana Bull said, “students had nothing but great things to say about it. We actually received a scholarship for the show to come here from Capital Region BOCES.”
There was a question and answer session with the actors after the performance.
Bull said “the kids really could relate to the lyrics, since we are reading Rome and Juliet and Macbeth it made these plays so much more real.”
Students learned that Shakespeare coined over 3000 words in his lifetime, and that the power of words no matter how they are spoken (in a play or rap) still mean the same today as they did hundreds of years ago.
