Local Author Visits SAEC ELA Classes
Tuesday, February 13, 2018
Author JD Spero visited the Southern Adirondack Education Center on February 8. The local author who has published several young adult novels spoke to students in the Exceptional Learners Division about story structure, the hero’s journey, shared advice on how to get published and stressed the importance of editing and revisions.
In 2015 Spero published Forte, which is set in a fictionalized Whitehall. The sequel, Concerto, was recently released. It is tells the story of a talented young pianist who moves and has to decide if she wants to pursue sports or music. Students were treated to a first time read aloud of the first chapter of Concerto.
Spero told the students that she wasn’t a big reader herself in high school, but she liked to write poetry and keep journals. She said she wished she read more as a young adult. “The more you read the better writer you will be,” said Spero.
Spero says she likes to use symbolism in her work. “The unspoken message of the magic potion, is drugs, that there is peer pressure to experiment,” says Spero. She doesn’t want to preach, but feels that the mistakes her characters make, can apply to the young people who read her books. “It’s about choices.”
Aspiring writer Cheri Morris, a nine grader from Glens Falls CSD sat in the front row and took in all the advice. “It was pretty cool to see up close,” she said.
Having read Forte, Morris is looking forward to reading the sequel.
