STEP Students Practice the Art of Diplomacy
Wednesday, April 25, 2018
STEP students in Mr. Terry's art class at the Southern Adirondack Education Center took part in the Memory Project earlier this school year. The Memory Project is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, disasters, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. STEP students were joined in this effort by more than a thousand young artists.
The portraits that the students created were recently delivered to children and teens in Russia. The organizers told Mr. Terry, "it was unforgettable for all involved. The children were so excited to receive your artwork and very touched by your efforts to create such special gifts. It was truly a unique experience for them."
A Russian newspaper covered the story and titled it "From America with Love." It began, "at the height of the political crisis, these portraits of kindness flew to Russia with the most kind wishes from across the ocean." They went on to call the project a "remarkable example of people's diplomacy."
Organizers thanked Mr. Terry and artists for exemplifying the art of diplomacy and helping to show that even though there may be tension between Russia and the US, youth can still share joy and see themselves in one another.
As a thank you, the Memory Project created a video which shows students in Mr. Terry's class at the beginning and continues with many children receiving their portraits together at all the different locations that were involved.
Kudos Mr. Terry and STEP students!
