Tuesday, May 08, 2018
On behalf of Lin King, President of the Adirondack Area School Boards (AASBA), and Jim Dexter, Treasurer of the Adirondack Area School Boards, we would like to thank the WSWHE BOCES staff for nominating an exceptional student to receive this year's AASBA Community Service Award.
This year's recipient of the AASBA Community Service Award is Mary F. Mangona, a criminal justice studies student at the Southern Adirondack Education Center and South Glens Falls Central School District.
Mary exemplifies a student who has given a lot of her time to her community. She volunteers regularly as a security guard for numerous special events, such as: Taste of the North Country, Special Olympics, Shamrock Shuffle, CTE Open House and the South Glens Falls Holiday Parade. She has also been involved in the South High Marathon Dance with fundraising, setting up and other organizational matters.
Mary has been a dancer at the Bolton Dance Academy for 15 years. Most recently she volunteered as an assistant teacher and back stage helper. She also volunteers at St. Mary's Church doing clothing drives, delivering poinsettias to the elderly during the holidays, and other special events. She is a member of National Honor Society, is Class Captain and has numberous other academic distinctions. She won first place in the Prepared Speech event at the 2018 Area III Regional SkillsUSA competition.
In the fall, she plans to attend SUNY Potsdam to major in Psycology and minor in Criminal Justice Studies.
We would also like to thank the five area companies that generously donated to the Association to allow the AASBA to continue with this long time, important tradition of recognizing one student from each participating school district. Their contributions allow the Association to publicize the name of each student and his/her school in The Chronicle newspaper.
