Spring Fling at WSTLC
Wednesday, May 30, 2018
Everyone should be able to go to a fancy dance. That was the idea when students and staff at the Washington Street Teaching and Learning Center (WSTLC) decided to hold their first ever spring fling.
The idea was originally brought up by a student whose home school was getting for their prom and asked Principal Laura Schaeffer if WSTLC could have a prom. Ms. Schaeffer said she didn’t see why they couldn’t have a dance, especially since the WSTLC started having once per month dances this school year as an incentive through Boys Town. Helen Carroll and Melissa Slavin spearheaded the effort to make the end of the year dance one to remember.
Merit and Progress students organized a vote to choose a theme. ‘Under the Sea’ was the most popular choice. Students school wide created the decorations in Art classes or when they down time.
“They took great pride in making things,” says Carroll.
From sharks and swordfish, to a whole myriad of deep see creatures, all students had something to do with it.
Staff donated fancy outfits to a ‘clothing store’ for students to purchase using Boys Town points and helped students get ready on the big day. The event was also an opportunity to practice social skills.
Every detail was taken into account, from blue punch to cups with the date and theme on them for students to keep as a memento of the day. SkyZone donated 2 tickets as a special door prize. Staff even managed to pull off a flash mob for the third song which was big hit.
Katie Rockenstire of Whitehall CSD said, “I loved the music, getting dressed up and dancing.”
Brandon Hayes of Hadley-Luzerne said, “l liked hanging out with my friends.”
