40th Annual Regional Spelling Bee
Monday, June 11, 2018
On Wednesday, June 6th, 2018, 32 students in grades 4-8 representing 19 school districts competed in the 40th Annual BOCES Regional Spelling Bee at Saratoga Springs Maple Avenue Middle School. The event was hosted by the Enrichment Resource Center of WSWHE BOCES and the Junior Chamber International Saratoga Springs Jaycees. The pronouncer for the evening was Amy Derwin, librarian at Galway High School.
Prizes were donated by Northshire Bookstore of Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), and Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom. The top six spellers were awarded gift cards to Northshire Bookstore, the second place winner, tickets to a SPAC Ballet performance, and first place, tickets to Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom in Lake George. Courtesy of the Jaycees, the first, second and third place finishers received a trophy. All spellers received a t-shirt and a certificate acknowledging their participation in the event.
The p-r-e-s-s-u-r-e was on as these students spelled challenging words such as “quota, hyena, jackknife, and eaves.” After 25 rounds and over two and a half hours of competition, the 32 students were whittled down to three; third place winner, Camden Wolfield of Lake George Elementary, second place winner, Casey Wan of Saratoga Springs Caroline Street School, and first place winner, Alexis Ward, of Fort Ann High School.
Alexis and Casey battled it out until Casey was ultimately defeated after misspelling “shrewd.” Alexis was able to spell the word correctly as well as her follow-up word, “luggage”, awarding her the title of first place!
This award is not new to the Ward family, however. Alexis’s older brother, Patrick Ward, was the first place winner of the 38th annual spelling bee in 2016. Alexis was the second place finisher of the 39th annual spelling bee last year. Alexis’s name will join her brother’s on the regional spelling bee plaque that is placed in the first place winner’s school for the year.
