Chief School Officers Outline 2019 Legislative Priorities

Chief School Officers and Board of Education presidents from the 31 school districts in the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES supervisory area discussed their 2019 legislative priorities with members of the New York State Legislature from both parties on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the F. Donald Myers Education Center. Education leaders are calling on legislators to:
Guests speakers from D.A. Collins Construction Co., Morcon Tissue, and Telescope Furniture spoke about the critical need for skilled workers in the area and the difficulties employers have in creating a sustainable pipeline for the future.
“The need for people to build this country is staggering,” David Collins, of D.A. Collins Construction Co. said. “The number of people with a skills background is staggeringly small. There’s going to be a lot of work. We need a skilled workforce. It starts right here with programs like this.”

The Chief School Officers also recognized two outstanding business partners – Irving Tissue based in Fort Edward and R.J. O’Brien Insurance Agency of Glens Falls – for the positive impact they have had on students.
SkillsUSA and FFA students spoke about their organizations and the Career and Technical Education programs they are enrolled in. Students from the Culinary Arts program prepared and served breakfast to a crowd of over 90 people. Criminal Justice students assisted with parking and safety. Horticulture students created beautiful centerpieces for the tables.
