Hudson Falls Heros Program Providing Unique Experiences for Exceptional Learners
Tuesday, April 09, 2019
Exceptional Learners in the 9th and 10th grade Basic Employability Skills Training (BEST) program at the Southern Adirondack Education Center (SAEC) have been participating the Hudson Falls Heroes program through Amorak Youth.
Amorak means "spirit of the wolf" Strength, Pride, Loyalty...and Hope. The organization’s mission is to help youth achieve positive life changes through recognizing their unique needs and capabilities while providing a sense of connection with the larger community. Amorak Youth has been working with youth in Hudson Falls and Fort Edward for the last 4 years to design programs to engage youth through the Arts, Music, Outdoor, Recreational Activities for Kids.
Hudson Falls Heroes is an ambitious program aimed at helping kids understand the role of volunteer organizations in the health and safety of their community. Dr. Kathleen Braico has been helping to make the connection between Amorak Youth and WSWHE BOCES. In February students learned about how to prepare a "Go Bag" to be used in the event that evacuation is required. Dr. Braico caught students’ attention by relating the program to a zombie apocalypse!
In March students visited Bay Ridge Emergency Management Services where they learned how first responders train. After seeing some of the equipment, students were able to practice starting an IV and putting in an airway tube. During the month of April students learned CPR and visited the Kingsbury firehouse.
“This has been a great community collaboration and has been providing our students with experiences they might not otherwise have”, said Sarah Matarazzo, Principal for Special Programs at SAEC. “It’s really been eye opening for them.”
