Forestry Students Compete at New York Conservation Competition

Congratulations to all Career & Tech Ed students in the Environmental Conservation and Forestry program who participated in the New York State Conservation Competition held on May 19 at Paul Smith’s College.
Students who placed in the top three spot were:
More than 400 high school students from BOCES programs throughout the state competed. Participants competed against each other in three categories: Forestry, Woodsmen’s, and Equipment. Some of the Forestry events included Tree Identification, Wildlife Identification, Tree Scaling, Log Scaling, and Compass & Pace, among others. The Equipment contests included Bulldozer Log Roll, Backhoe, Log Skidder, and Skid Steer. Under the Woodsmen’s category, there was the Ax Throw, the Peavey Log Roll, and Fire Building.
As an added incentive for students, many of the participating colleges offer scholarships as awards for finishing in the top three for some of the events.
