A Back-to-School Kick-Off was held on September 11 at the Southern Adirondack Education Center (SAEC) for students in the Special Education Program including the new Skills Training and Education Program or (STEP).
Students from BOCES Employability Skills Training (BEST), Life Skills and Works Skills Training (WST) programs also joined in the Kick-Off activities.
After a pizza luncheon, students enjoyed participating in several fun Friday activities that included a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors Tag, a relay race, Capture the Flag and then a staff against students water balloon challenge.
However, before the students took to the playing field, the new physical education teacher Jessica Nevins, re-enforced the Boys Town skill of sportsmanship, which includes playing fair according to the rules, avoiding fights, no criticizing, accepting winning without bragging, accepting losing without pouting and thanking the other players after the competition.
Assistant Principal of the STEP program, Linda Beck-Fragale said, “We wanted to set a positive tone for the 2015-2016 school year. All of the staff at SAEC made building rapport with students a priority. We appreciate having opportunities such as this one to help the students get to know one another, see staff as adults that they can approach and give them an opportunity to work on their pro-social skills. It was a very fun day!”
