The first class of students in the Early College High School: Advanced Manufacturing Program were invited to tour GLOBALFOUNDRIES. The tour introduced these high school juniors to the semiconductor industry and all the technology that goes into making wafers. Fab 8 is currently the largest commercial capital expansion project in the USA, and it is large!
The ECHS Advanced Manufacturing students heard an overview of the company – the world’s first full-service semiconductor foundry with a truly global footprint. With operations in Singapore, Germany and Malta, NY, GLOBALFOUNDRIES provides a unique combination of advanced technology and manufacturing to more than 150 customers.
Broken into smaller groups, students watched a video that explained how chips are made (please see video below), and tried on the bunny suits that employees wear in the dust-free cleanrooms, which are over 100,000 times cleaner than an operating room. They also saw the FOUP process for transporting wafers, the L&D Display/Process Overview, and the MTDC Simulation Lab.
Experiences such as this help students relate what they are learning in the classroom to further education and careers. The students saw firsthand how GLOBALFOUNDRIES employees program advanced manufacturing equipment in order to create a product while ensuring quality and safety.
