WSWHE BOCES Assists Educators To Uplift Their Literacy Practices Through Statewide Event

The event, which was a hybrid webinar with in-person discussion and presentations, provided New York State administrators and literacy leaders with an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of evidence-based literacy practices in PK-12 education. WSWHE BOCES was one of 37 BOCES participating. Over 70 staff from 31 districts in the WSWHE BOCES service area attended in person and engaged with their counterparts from around the state virtually.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Nonie K. Lesaux, the Roy Edward Larsen Professor of Education and Human Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. Lesaux previously partnered with the Department on the series of Advanced Literacy Briefs published in 2017.

WSWHE BOCES Director of School Improvement and Assessment Katie Jones said, “we were happy to play a role in bringing our districts together with educators from across the state to focus on research-based practices and the science of reading.”

The event ties into Governor Kathy Hochul’s Back to Basics plan to improve reading proficiency in New York as mentioned in the 2024 State of the State address. To learn more about the NYS Literacy Initiative and the 7 briefs, visit: bit.ly/47iAM5z
