HSE Student Wins NYACCE Student of the Year

The New York Association for Continuing and Community Education (NYACCE), a statewide organization that supports professionals serving lifelong learners, has recognized 14 outstanding adult students from across the state.

Each year, the association honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional perseverance and achievement in their educational journeys. The honorees come from diverse backgrounds and have faced significant challenges - including immigration, mental health struggles, and the demands of work and family - yet they have remained committed to their education. Their stories reflect resilience, determination and hope, offering inspiration to their communities.

Among this year’s honorees is Lauren Winslow, a student in the WSWHE BOCES High School Equivalency (HSE) program. Nominated by her instructor, Frank Finch, Lauren was recognized for her unwavering commitment to education and her leadership among peers.

Lauren balanced long commutes, multiple jobs and personal hardships while consistently prioritizing her academic goals. She became only the second student in her program to complete all City University of New York math packets and pursued advanced science coursework well beyond the program’s requirements. Her goal is to become a traveling nurse.

Known for her positive attitude and willingness to support others, Lauren earned the respect of both faculty and fellow students. Her resilience and dedication made her a strong candidate for the NYACCE Student of the Year recognition.

Congratulations to Lauren on receiving this well-deserved honor.
