Together Against Bullying: WSWHE BOCES Celebrates Unity Day

Unity Day craft of a tree with orange leavesThis year, Unity Day was celebrated on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. Across centers, the color orange filled classrooms, hallways and outdoor spaces as a symbol of unity and support for safe and welcoming learning environments.

At the Myers Center, the celebration was part of the ongoing No Place for Hate initiative. Students created and displayed scarecrows that represented the unique spirit of each program. The scarecrows were showcased, where students and staff voted for their favorites in a variety of categories. The activity encouraged collaboration, creativity, and appreciation for each other’s strengths. “We cannot wait to celebrate our school as a diverse community of learners,” staff shared.

The Southern Adirondack Education Center (SAEC) focused on empathy and understanding through a “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” activity organized by the Student Council. Participants decorated paper shoes to reflect their life experiences, challenges, and personal stories. The display served as a reminder that everyone’s journey is different and that compassion begins with understanding.

At the Sanford Street Teaching and Learning Center (SSTLC), students and staff spent the day spreading positivity. Dressed in orange, they took to the sidewalks to “chalk the walk” with encouraging messages and created a “kindness chain” by linking together written notes of kind words and good deeds.

Across all WSWHE BOCES offices, staff also joined the celebration by wearing orange and promoting the day’s message of unity.

Unity Day is a powerful reminder that every action, every kind word, and every shared smile contributes to a culture where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.
