Centered on the question, “How can I use art to explore and celebrate my unique identity and personal story?” students were asked to reflect on and express what makes them unique. Each student was given an element from the WSWHE BOCES logo to incorporate into their artwork, symbolizing how every individual contributes to the whole. The logo represents WSWHE BOCES’ five-county service area, and its design nods to the people who are at the center of everything the organization does. This makes it the perfect foundation for a project about identity, community, and connection.
Through this creative process, students explored how community shapes identity—and how their own identities help shape the community around them.
“My art shows how I see myself - my hair, my glasses, and the things I like,” said Jaden Healy, from South Glens Falls Central School District.
Viewers are encouraged to look for five favorite things hidden within each student's artwork. These personal touches offer a glimpse into what brings each student joy.
“My artwork is about never giving up and not quitting,” said Damian Howarth, who is from Whitehall Central School District.
The project aligns closely with one of WSWHE BOCES’ core values: W.I.D.E.—Wellness, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity.
Art plays a vital role in supporting these values by fostering empathy, celebrating individuality, and strengthening a sense of belonging. At Myers Center, art becomes more than a class—it’s a bridge between self-expression and community connection.
- Wellness: Creating art that focuses on what makes students happy helps promote self-awareness, relaxation, and emotional well-being.
- Inclusion: Every student has the opportunity to participate, share their perspective, and see themselves represented in the art community.
- Diversity: Students are encouraged to bring their own cultural backgrounds, interests, and stories into their artwork, helping them feel seen and valued.
- Equity: All students have access to high-quality, meaningful art experiences that build community, foster empathy, and strengthen connections across the school.
“The logo looks like a check mark, like a team saying ‘let’s go!’ Art lets me express myself in colors,” said Matt Sleight from Galway Central School District.
With Mr. VanDenbergh’s guidance, students shaped their ideas into a colorful celebration of who they are and how they connect with others. Each piece is a vibrant reflection of identity, creativity, and unity. This project not only highlights the artistic talent at F. Donald Myers Education Center but also embodies the values that make WSWHE BOCES a place where everyone belongs.
