Young Scholars
The Young Scholars program meets the unique intellectual, social, and emotional needs of high ability students in grades 4-8 who have reasoning skills in the top 1% or 2% of students in their age group nationwide (as measured by the Cognitive Abilities Test - CogAT).
The program presents literature, writing, humanities, math, and science at a pace and level of instruction matched to students' abilities. The purpose is to strengthen critical thinking skills and nurture creative, autonomous thought.
Districts that purchase the Young Scholars program receive evaluation, testing, supervision, and teaching services for students meeting the standards of this highly selective and advanced program. Districts that participate in the Enrichment Resource Center receive a discount on the Young Scholars Program.
There are currently three different Young Scholars models in place at area school sites that vary depending on student ages, strengths, and location:
- Young Scholars
- Academic Enrichment
- Socratic Forum

Student Evaluation and Testing
Taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is the first step in the process for admission to the Young Scholars program.
BOCES provides evaluation services to districts to assess or determine its population of gifted and talented students. We will work with your district to schedule CogAT tests, provide a tester and all necessary materials, score the tests, and convey test results to the district.
Each school district sets its own criteria for admission to the Young Scholars and other enrichment programs.
Parents who wish to have their children take the CogAT should work with their school district; the district will then coordinate with BOCES.
